FAQ

Why Get An Orthopedic Dog Bed?

One thing is certain: all dogs love their sleeping time. Not only this, but dogs also spend a significant part of their day just lounging around if they don’t have anything else to do.

“On average, most dogs spend about 50% of their day sleeping, about 12 hours in a 24-hour period. Puppies, large-breed dogs, and older dogs may sleep more, while small-breed dogs and working dogs may sleep less”, says Sandra Mitchell for PetMD (1).

From this, it should be clear: dogs really do need the best dog bed available. But what is the best bed for a dog? Well, it is a bit of a personal question, but any dog can definitely benefit from sleeping on an orthopedic mattress.

Orthopedic dog beds, sometimes also called posturepedic dog beds, contain mattresses just like those made for humans. They use one of a couple of types of memory foam available, to provide optimal support to your dog’s body while sleeping.

The memory foam gets soft on pressure points, thus making your dog more comfortable and helping relieve any pain or soreness in the bones and joints. Although these beds are comfortable for any dog, they are especially helpful for older dogs, dogs dealing with issues like hip dysplasia and arthritis, and dogs recovering from surgery.

#5: Runner Up Orthopedic Bed For Large Dogs:Furhaven Jumbo Plus Pet Dog Bed

9 Best Orthopedic Dog Bed Options Australia (2022 Buyers Guide) - gentledogtrainers.com.au (14)

  • Extremely effective
  • Huge loyal customer base
  • Excellent quality materials
  • Several sizes available

Finding the best large dog beds for extra large to giant breed canines can be extremely difficult, especially when you're looking for an orthopedic bed that is actually supportive enough. Large dogs can get quite heavy too, and most memory foam mattresses for dogs are simply not designed to support that much weight. The problem becomes even worse if your pet is actually dealing with health issues like arthritis and hip dysplasia (which is more common among giant breeds too).

If you decide not to go with Barney Bed, then this option from Furhaven is a good choice as it has medical grade memory foam combined with cooling gel foam on top. The bed really looks and feels just like a therapeutic mattress made for humans. In addition to this, there is also a raised headrest which many dogs enjoy using.

In short the large to jump Furhaven bed range is really a star among large orthopedic dog beds that are available in Australia.

#6: Best Orthopedic Bed For Medium Breeds:JOYELF Memory Foam Dog Bed

9 Best Orthopedic Dog Bed Options Australia (2022 Buyers Guide) - gentledogtrainers.com.au (17)

  • Thick memory foam base
  • Warm and fluffy inside
  • Features a waterproof base and non-slip rubber backing
  • Bolsters on all sides for comfort and coziness

This dog bed from Joyelf is definitely among the most adorable dog beds we have found. This bed has bolsters all around, but with a lowered part at the front for easier entrance. What makes this bed stand out is the inside sleeping surface which is super fluffy and cozy. At the same time, the external part was made of a durable fabric with strong stitching to ensure durability.

All of this is cute, but it’s not the main reason why we recommend this bed. The reason why the Joyelf bed is on our list is that it has a tough memory foam base that provides enough support for small and medium dogs.

In addition to this, there is also a non-slip backing at the base that prevents the bed from sliding around.

Good Quality and Supportive
"Be aware that this dog bed has a cream coloured sleeping surface so will have to be washed quite often. To reduce this I lined the bed with the dog’s previous quilt. Knocked a star off due to this. Should be ok to clean when required as all washable with removable foam inserts in edges and base. Very supportive and comfortable for my aging Staffy which is why it was bought. Quite pricey but she’s worth it!"

The base of the bed is made with a thick layer of egg-crate orthopedic foam. While egg-crate foam might not be the best for heavier dogs, it works completely fine for smaller pups.

The cover on this bed and the top blanket part are actually one piece. You can remove it from the orthopedic mattress and wash it as needed. The cover is made with faux lambswool fabric on the sleeping surface and the inner side of the blanket which makes this bed exceptionally warm.

"Just got this for my dog, and she seems to love it. When she first stepped on it, she seemed a little off-put by the "crunchy" sound of what I assume is the waterproof inner cover. Nice and Soft.
"All the top and sides are pretty tough for my GSD that likes to paw at the bed but the stitching on the zipper is just weak, they used a fine thread the popped and tore loose after 3 nights of sleeping on and then my pup had access to the quilting underneath that is easy to tear away and he choked on it. I had put a waterproof cover over the foam so he didn't have access to the foam luckily. Gonna have to resew all the seams at the zipper now. It is a very nice but though, just the one weak link."

FAQ

What size bed should I get for my dog?

When getting an orthopedic bed for your dog, the sizing is basically the same as with any other type of bed. You can probably get the right size simply by guessing, but the only surefire way to know the right size is by measuring your dog. For best results, measure your dog in all of his or her favorite sleeping positions and choose the size accordingly.

How thick should an orthopedic dog bed be?

There is no rule set in stone that says how thick an orthopedic mattress for dogs should be. If your pet is a small or tiny dog, you pretty much have nothing to worry about. Standard memory foam mattresses for dogs are usually 3-4 inches thick, and this will definitely be enough for a dog that is not too heavy. However, for large and giant breeds, it is better to choose a 7-inch thick mattress.

When and how should I clean my dog’s bed?

Just like ours, the dog’s bedding should be washed on a regular basis. Even though the bed might not be visibly dirty, it can still become a breeding ground for various microorganisms. For this reason, getting a bet with a removable cover that you can wash in the washing machine is always a good idea - and all of the beds on our list have this feature. To be safe, remove the cover and wash it every couple of weeks (4).

Dogs don't need soft beds, but instead need to rest on a firm surface; too-soft pillow beds don't offer the support needed for comfortable rest and healthy joints, and an older dog who sinks into a plush bed may have trouble getting into and out of it. This doesn't mean he should sleep on the floor—that's too firm.

Do older dogs need orthopedic beds? ›

A lot of pet owners are under the mistaken impression that their dog doesn't need an orthopedic bed until he or she is older and starts having joint and arthritis problems, but this line of thinking could not be further from the truth. Dogs of all ages (from puppies to seniors) need an orthopedic bed.

Are elevated dog beds good for arthritis? ›

Elevated beds are suitable for your dog in terms of even weight distribution, but they're not suitable for conditions like joint inflammation.

Do dogs like having their own bed? ›

So, they need a comfy bed to snooze on just like you do. Although you might find your pup occasionally, or often, snuggled at your side during the night, dogs need to have a bed of their own. Then, even when you're not there, they can relax in a spot that's dedicated to them.
